1 size fits none?

Posted by [info]_stethoscope in [info]vintage_look on 2008.07.19 at 02:26
I hope you guys can answer my questions or help solve my problem. My boyfriend bought me multiple pairs of stockings made by leg avenue after I was talking about how much I wanted some. I was so upset when I put them on and my thigh bulged over the lace top :(

It seems like if anyone had a centimeter of fat on their thigh, it would bulge. It says it's 1 size fits all for 95lbs-160lbs and I weigh 135 (5'5"). I was wondering if there are any better quality brands that won't make that bulge or if I should invest in plus size hosiery..? I want to wear them as undergarments so badly! Thank you!

What happens when it's too hot to cook

Zucchini Italian style

It is too hot to cook (actually humidity was more the problem in northeast today), but I finally got use out of my new Julienne veggie peeler. What a fun little gadget to own :)

Fresh Apricot Tartlet

Posted by [info]librarychan in [info]food_porn on 2008.07.18 at 22:54

I made this tonight: a fresh apricot tartlet (with the help of the Joy of Cooking cookbook) with a shortbread crust, vanilla bean custard, and apricots from the farmers market.

Fresh Apricot Tartlet

It took almost 2 hours of prep, but it tastes better than it looks.

Blueberry Cake

feel: accomplished
Pirate wants blueberry cake for her birthday. This is the same request she made for her 2nd birthday. That cake was rather too dense and nowhere near blueberry enough. So I tried a different tack this year.

I modified the Good Housekeeping Book of Desserts Yellow Cake recipe.

2 1/4 cups of cake flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup shortening (reduced to 1/2 cup)
3/4 cup milk (eliminated entirely)
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder (eliminated entirely (which might not have been a good idea now that I think about it...)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract (eliminated entirely)
3 large eggs

Mixed the salt in to the sugar. Creamed the sugar and shortening together. Added eggs individually. Added vanilla extract. Added flour. Folded in one can of blueberry pie filling.

It's in the oven right now but it looks perfect (like my chocolate cherry cake that I make with a chocolate cake mix and a can of cherry pie filling) and the bit I licked off my finger tastes delightfully of blueberry.

I'm just addicted to low prices! ;]

I am not a big Joss Whedon person. Except for Firefly, which grew on me in spite of all my best efforts to hate it (and in spite of the many things about it that still irritate me). I've never even seen a whole episode of Buffy and I've decided I like being that person.

Having said the above, I've got to cop to the fact that if you're not watching Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, watchable for free via Hulu only until Sunday, then you're missing out on something... something. I don't know. It's damned entertaining, I can say that much.

I had my massage today. I was going to cancel but I was fired less than 24 hours before my appointment. She’s been a massage therapist for 21 years and works out of her home which, conveniently, is four driveways down from mine!

First she had me select a scented oil. I went with grapefruit, though that’s probably as far from “relaxing” as a scent can get. She left the room while I stripped down to my underwear and climbed on the table, which was really sturdy and didn’t make a sound under me. She began by massaging a mix of oil and lotion into my back and then used heated stones to massage me. Then she just used her hands. She worked on my back for such a long time, spending most of it on my tailbone and ass, which is where most of my remaining pain rests. Oh lordy am I tender. But I breathed through a lot of it and spoke up when I needed her to pull back a bit. She’d let it rest for awhile and work on my upper back, neck and shoulders.

She placed a large heating pad on my lower back and ass and then she moved down to my legs and massaged them ankle to upper thigh. Which was a strange feeling. Then my feet. Then she had me get over onto my back; putting pillows under my head and a foam block under my legs because I have trouble with being flat. She placed pads wet with rosewater over my eyes and a mask on top of them. She worked on the front of my legs for awhile and then focused on my arms and hands. It felt so strange to have someone massaging my upper arms. I don’t even let people see those mush less touch them! Next was my chest. She spent a lot of time on my sternum and breastbone and I was really shocked at how tender it was. Then my face, scalp, and neck again. After that she massaged my belly.

Then! Because my lower back was getting cranky and pissy at me for lying on it, she had me get back on my stomach and spent more time calming it down. She applied this really yummy smelling cinnamon balm as well as two others and worked them into my lower back and ass.

It was two and a half hours long and amaaaaaaaaaazing! She found a million little nooks and crannies in my muscles and massaged every single one of them. She found knots in places I didn’t even know existed. And she massaged my belly!

The best thing about spending six days in the hospital and posting half naked pictures of myself when I felt the worst about how I looked is that it’s now much easier to get around that self conscious wall that I’ve been hiding behind my entire life. It’s a thousand degrees here and I saw no point in using the sheet intended for modesty covering because, hell, she didn’t care so why should I? There were moments when I felt uncomfortably vulnerable. Lying on my back, exposed, in daylight. That’s something that I wouldn’t even let the people I’ve had sex with see. Because, oh my god, I’m all fat and lumpy! But spend six days in a hospital, having people change your catheter with your gown flapping in the breeze, or expose yourself to the entire internet and none of it really matters as much anymore.

I had posted this in my own journal but thought some of you might "appreciate" it or at least find it "interesting". :)

In March of 2007, a 16-yr-old student, Kodjo Yenga was stabbed and beaten to death by other teenagers.

This is how the Associated Press (via the Boston Herald) reports the story:

LONDON - School had just ended and Kodjo Yenga was walking home along a tree-lined London street when a gang of angry youths blocked his path.

One held a snarling pit bull terrier that strained against its lead. Chants of "Kill him!" erupted from the mob.

The teenagers, some of whom still wore their school uniforms, seized Yenga and one stabbed him in the heart. Witnesses heard members of the gang laugh as he lay dying in his girlfriend’s arms.

You can't help but think of Kodjo as a young scholar who was merely strolling the oak-lined boulevard with his beloved girlfriend in tow when, out of the seedy alleys of London emerged a mob of murderous teenagers. Perhaps murderous teenagers aren't quite dangerous enough, so the snarling devil dog is thrown in for good measure.

I believe this is my first post here and I am afraid I don't have pictures yet (but I will). I am so excited I had to share!! I am currently visiting my folk's house and they have THE BEST thrift stores here. The town is medium sized and most the people have been here for many generations (I believe my family has been here for at least 6 generations) and old "junk" is pretty easy to come by in yard sales and tag sales, etc. Today we went to the local thrift store and they actually separate out the vintage clothing from the other stuff. I headed to the vintage racks and apparently someone about my size, who was a seamstress (like me) cleared out her closet recently because there were at least a half dozen dresses from the 50-60s there, many of them handmade! There were even two "tennis dresses with shorts" as the tags were marked. They are all in the washer right now and I plan to try them on and take pictures later this evening. I will try to post them asap. The best part...in addition to the dresses and stuff, I got a few t-shirts, a couple books and toys a pair of boots and an outfit for my daughter and only spent $57!! Ok, off to check the laundry. I hope this post is ok for this community, I figured you all would appreciate it as much as I do!

Here's me in the new glasses I got today They're these from Jones West. I really like them. Aside from sharpening up my vision, these also are a bit edgier than my last pair that I'm wearing the the userpic. Now I just have to decide if I want to do something with my hair!
